Abstract:

Chemigation with sprinkler irrigation systems is widely used throughout the United States. One potential environmental hazard of this practice is the point source water contamination due to backflow of chemical following an unexpected shutoff of the irrigation pump. Backflow can be prevented by stopping flow from the chemical supply tank to the irrigation pipeline and preventing backflow from the irrigation pipeline to the water source. In this paper, we present an analysis of relative risks of the source of contamination and results of tests of chemigation backflow prevention equipment are presented.
