Abstract:

A multilayered model is developed to analyze the behavior of composite pipes, such as prestressed concrete pipe, to the combined effects of internal pressure and applied loads. The pipe wall is subdivided into many circumferential layers. A stress-strain diagram, an initial prestress, and a failure criterion are assigned to each layer. To predict visible cracking, it is assumed that concrete can be strained beyond the onset of microcracking, which occurs at or near the point of maximum tensile strength, until an ultimate tensile strain at which a crack develops is reached. The model is used to predict load combinations that result in cracking of two prestressed concrete pipe segments tested under combined effects of internal pressure and applied three-edge-bearing load.
