Abstract:

Experimental results are presented which show that Melbourne's 'Small Scale Spectral Density Parameter,' S, controls the negative pressures on the sides and rear face of rectangular prisms when immersed in turbulent shear flows. A general trend was observed, showing that an increase of this parameter reduces the magnitude of the pressures. The base pressures are much better correlated with this small-scale turbulence parameter, than with the large-scale turbulence parameter (Lx/W). The above observations have important implications on the current practice of wind-load modeling in low-speed wind tunnels and point out the importance of the scaling of the small scale turbulence.
