Actual Versus Assumed Behaviour of Girder Bridges

Abstract:

It is generally believed that the discrepancies between calculated and actual responses of bridges can diminish, to the point of being nonexistent, with refinement in the method of analysis. Dealing with bridges composed of steel girders and concrete slabs, it is shown in this paper that the actual bridge responses cannot be analytically evaluated very accurately because of certain inherent factors in actual bridges which are not given to accurate assessment. Specific examples of these factors, derived from data on bridge tests, are provided in the paper to support the above contention.
