Abstract:

TVA has constructed many of its dams on limestone foundations. Some of these foundations have been highly weathered and required special treatment not only to ensure strength but to develop an effective cutoff. The various case histories presented in this paper point out the fact that a detailed exploration program will benefit the construction of dams. The more that is known beforhand will allow for the proper scheduling of construction events, which in turn will reduce the cost of building dams.
