Abstract:

Galesville Dam, Oregon, completed in August 1985, and Upper Stillwater Dam, Utah, completed in August 1987, are two RCC (roller compacted concrete) gravity dams featuring different approaches to the design of RCC. The evaluation of the hardened concrete properties included the testing of 6-inch (150-mm) diameter cores by the Bureau of Reclamation's Concrete and Structural Branch laboratory in Denver. Discussions include analysis of the extensive test results for both dams including density, compressive strength, direct tensile strength and direct shear tests. Joint bonding is also addressed with regard to construction records of joint placing conditions, including joint age and ambient temperature.
