Abstract:

In the aftermath of the tragic collapse of the L'Ambiance Plaza apartment building at Bridgeport, Conn., in April 1987, reforms are being proposed. In 1987 ASCE approved writing of a standard for temporary structures, whose genesis and rationale are discussed. Regarding construction safety in general, the construction safety chief of AFL-CIO is quoted as saying it may be possible to slash the accident rate on construction by 75%. Finally, the article briefly discusses the soon-to-be-released ASCE practice manual, Quality in the Constructed Project, which recommends several reforms including independent peer review of designs of certain projects, and presence on some projects of the professional engineer who designed it.
