The Design and Operating Experience of a Multiplexer Application in Conventional Hydro Powerhouse Control

Abstract:

The design of the Bonneville Second Powerhouse control system presented an opportunity to replace conventional cables with a multiplexer system that would provide a two-way data communication path from local multiplexers in ten new generator unit switchboards to remote multiplexers in equipment racks adjacent to the Bonneville First Powerhouse control room. The new powerhouse is approximately one (1) mile from the existing powerhouse control room and cables must cross the existing spillway dam. The high cost of new cables or of relocating the control room provided an opportunity to design in a multiplexer system without a hard wired back-up. After initial installation the system was reconfigured in 1984 and has provided the powerhouse operators with a reliable, low maintenance control system. Future designs incorporating a modern multiplexer to replace large cable tray systems can be designed with experience and confidence.
