Abstract:

In 1984, the decision was made to rehabilitate the Lake Harriet Dam. The existing arch dam structure was encased with a rockfill buttress. The downstream buttress, which also acts as a spillway, was reinforced with steel bar grillage held in place by long horizontal bars. The reinforced rockfill provided an articulated structure that could accommodate future ground movement while improving the dam capabilities to resist forces due to overtopping floods. A 25-foot (7. 6 m) thick soil-bentonite mixture was tremied into place between the existing concrete arch dam and the upstream rockfill to act as a relatively impermeable barrier that was also deformable and anticipated to be self-healing. Other activities included upstream dredging, abutment shotcreting, rock instrumentation, and special applications of concrete.
