Abstract:

Measurements taken at several locations off the Irish coast show that the average power intensity available to Ireland well exceeds 20 kW/m. Several projects have been undertaken in an effort to exploit the waves. These include model tests of an Oscillating Water Column (O. W. C. ) and a full-scale study at Bull Rock. Results from an orifice study at Bull Rock show that a peak air power output was 572 kW. The wave-induced pressure at Bull Rock was large enough to dislodge an 8-tonne concrete cap placed over the air column. The converted wave power at Bull Rock will provide heating of a light house on the top of the Rock.
