Abstract:

The finite strip method is approaching a state of maturity as a structural analysis technique, as the well known finite element method has done. Two comprehensive (although somewhat dated) books on the method and its applications are available, as well as interim reports on advances in the field. Approximately six years have passed since the last comprehensive review of the literature. The authors are hopeful that this manuscript may provide a useful benchmark for investigators working in this area. The review of the finite strip method literature is organized by four classes of problems: static solutions, frequency analysis, buckling analysis and added elements. The literature in each area is reviewed by topic with little regard for chronological order. A summary and commentary on future developments follow the review.
