Abstract:

Winery wastewater is characterized by low pH, relatively high BOD, and a low nutrient content. Land application using rapid infiltration basins has been practiced successfully at a number of California wineries for many years. The use of rapid infiltration for treatment of winery wastewater is described for one central California operation at Winery A. Details on process loading, preapplication treatment, organic loading rates, and nitrogen loading rates are presented. A case history of one winery operation is described, including wastewater characteristics, loading rates, a monitoring program, and the results of the monitoring program. Comparisons are drawn to other food processing land application systems.
