Abstract:

Automated irrigation systems have traditionally relied on a time based controller set to operate the irrigation system for a specific duration and frequency. To determine the duration and frequency of irrigation required additional input based on some method of irrigation scheduling and re-setting of the controller periodically. By incorporating a simplified evapotranspiration (ET) estimation method based on daily minimum and maximum air temperature and latitude and a simple temperature sensor into an electronic irrigation controller and incorporating a crop coefficient function, a major portion of the irrigation scheduling function has been incorporated into the irrigation control unit. The paper describes the ET prediction method used, presents data on its accuracy and transferability and describes the adaptability of the equipment for use in agricultural applications.
