Abstract:

A contemporaneous set of bed load and suspended load sediment transport data were analysed for three hydrologic stations on the Yellow River. There were a total of 82 bed load events, and 110 suspended load events. The field measurements included flow discharge, river width and depth, water temperature and surface slope, and sediment size statistics. The analysis was made in terms of the areal streampower dissipation of the flow, according to the theory of Bagnold (1963). The results extended those found for fine, cohesionless grains in quasi-equilibrium, laboratory flows of unlimited sediment supply. Although the total data were constrained in sediment density and water temperature, a dimensional analysis was introduced to investigate the efficiency of streams in transporting sediment.
