Abstract:

The input data to numerical simulation models is often uncertain, and, consequently, model predictions may be uncertain. Such uncertainties are often treated by Monte Carlo techniques. A similar but more efficient methodology to assess the propagation of uncertain input data through the model and its impact on the output results is presented and is illustrated with reference to the seepage flow around a cofferdam. The methodology also identifies the 'more important' variables and thus aids in further efforts for data acquisition.
