Abstract:

In 1982, the Denver Urban Drainage and Flood Control District published interim guidelines for the design of sloped, loose riprap drop structures, as well as vertical wall drop structures with loose riprap stilling basins. Numerous partial failures of structures, many resulting from flows less than design flows, led the District to consider a complete evaluation of drop structures. In October 1985, the District retained McLaughlin Water Engineers, Ltd. to assist in evaluating the design, construction performance, and maintenance of existing drop structures, and to develop information and guidance to be used in preparing revisions and additions to the Drainage Criteria Manual. This paper discusses the first phase of the work, which culminated in a comprehensive report that was presented to the District, local government representatives, and engineering consultants at a seminar conducted in Denver on December 12, 1986.
