Abstract:

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region IV, has proposed a program, the Gulf Initiative, to better manage the natural resources within the Gulf of Mexico. As an initial step to measure the local interest and enthusiasm for such a program, a workshop was held on August 4, 5 and 6, 1986, in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The workshop participants generated a comprehensive list of issues and activities causing problems in the Gulf. The major problems were categorized into the following areas: toxics contamination, eutrophication, pathogen contamination, habitat changes, and changes in living resources. The workshop's list of activities affecting the Gulf ranged from waste disposal to overfishing to urban development. The workshop attendees also made recommendations on a management structure to guide the Gulf Initiative.
