Abstract:

An algorithm for the automatic generation, from solid models, of finite element meshes organized as spatially addressable quaternary trees (for 2-D analysis) or octal trees (for 3-D analysis) is introduced. The hierarchical organization and the spatial addressability of such meshes is exploited at the analysis level through a substructuring technique that can be used for global analysis as well as adaptive re-meshing and incremental re-analysis. The paper summarizes the global and incremental techniques, and presents some results from an experimental 2-D meshing and analysis system.
