Abstract:

In the past ten years, many new types of in situ test equipment and many new techniques have been developed. The papers in this volume are concerned with applications of in situ measurement to soil engineering problems and with practical use of tools such as the cone, pressuremeter, dilatometer, and other devices for measurement of soil properties or in situ stresses in soils. The latest developments in the uses of in situ tests are reviewed. This includes using in situ tests to improve the quality or reduce the costs of geotechnical investigations. The use of in situ test results in design of foundations, retaining structures, slopes, dewatering systems, and hazardous waste impoundments is covered. Also discussed are uses of in situ tests to evaluate liquefaction potential and the effectiveness of site improvement measures.

Subject Headings: Field tests | Soil stress | Soil properties | Soil pressure | Soil dilatancy | Volume measurement | Retaining structures
