Abstract:

A method is developed for minimizing the total cost of establishing relief drains by choosing appropriate depth and spacing of the drains. Solution graphs are presented for a wide range of input variables. A simple procedure has also been developed for computing the Hooghoudt's drain spacing using the optimal design. Use of the technique shows that total cost is relatively insensitive to the drain spacing.
