Abstract:

An In-Situ Consolidation Evaluation Device (ICED) was developed for field measurement of consolidation parameters by electro-osmosis. A brief description of the test apparatus and the measurement procedures is presented. A set of pilot tests was performed with this device in a soft clay deposit for which laboratory 1-D consolidation test results had been previously obtained. This paper discusses the initial results obtained from the in-situ pilot tests. Consolidation parameters estimated from the in-situ tests compare reasonably well with those from the conventional laboratory test. In addition, the values of electro-osmotic conductivity evaluated from laboratory electro-osmotic tests on undisturbed samples reasonably agree with those indirectly computed from the in-situ test results.
