Abstract:

This paper presents a tentative method for evaluating the limiting skin friction f//s for piles driven in clay based on sigma //h'c (horizontal effective stress at the interface at the end of the reconsolidation) determined by the S. Marchetti flat plate dilatometer test (DMT). This paper illustrates determinations of sigma //h'c against the dilatometer by using the standard DMT equipment and comments on a number of sigma //h (t) 'reconsolidation' curves obtained in various soil types. The paper also describes a comparison between f//s predicted by the proposed method and f//s determined from full scale pile load tests.
