Abstract:

Offshore deployment methods developed for use by the oil industry were combined with less expensive nearshore drill barge technology. This resulted in the successful completion of cone penetrometer explorations, up to 250 feet deep and in up to 60 feet of water, for costs less than conventional borings. The cone penetrometer test results are compared with site specific boring and laboratory data for enhanced understanding of subsurface conditions. Overwater cone deployment techniques are described, as well as site specific comparisons of cone penetrometer data with laboratory and boring data.
