Abstract:

Tiebacks were once used primarily to support temporary structures such as supported excavations. However, the use of tiebacks has been gradually expanded to include the support of permanent structures. One application of tiebacks in permanent structures is waterfront bulkheads, where they are used in place of deadman anchor systems, concrete walls and rockfilled timber cribbing for horizontal support. The performance of early installations was monitored and the data gathered was used to improve subsequent designs and construction techniques. Data was gathered by testing tiebacks during construction. This data is used to evaluate construction techniques and to verify the design assumptions and analysis techniques used. A review of early case history discussions demonstrates how the use of tiebacks for waterfront bulkheads has evolved and how facilities using different design and construction techniques have performed. Discussions of recent installations demonstrate how tiebacks can now be successfully installed in various subsurface environments for both construction of new facilities and restoration of existing deteriorated facilities.
