Abstract:

A system and related equipment have been developed, and tested on a recent dredged fill project, to compact sand, either clean or with limited silt, in lifts several feet in thickness during underwater placement. The compaction equipment and method of operation are described, as well as the monitoring probe developed to permit frequent underwater checks of the densification being obtained. The trial compaction program accomplished during construction of the Pier 'A' Expansion project at the Port of Long Beach is described, and the adaptations necessary for full project application. Fill densification results, as determined by cone penetration tests, soil borings, laboratory tests on undisturbed samples, and wharf pile driving resistance comparisons, are reported. Costs are summarized and the system's readiness for use on future projects is discussed.
