Abstract:

This paper outlines a method for physically surveying the present material condition of existing piers and wharves and assigning to them a safe rated capacity expressed in displacement tonnage of the berthing ship and the live load capacity of its deck. The tonnage may be below the capacity for which the structure was originally designed. An example is presented using a simplified method to determine a safe rated capacity. A Rated Capacity Report (RCR) must be prepared by the operator of the facility, containing the findings of a material condition survey and a desk analysis of how the rated capacity was determined. An authority reviewing the Rated Capacity Report and perhaps issuing a certificate is discussed.
