Abstract:

A routine inspection of wharves at the Turning Basin Terminal, uncovered evidence of extensive damage, including evidence that the 30-inch diameter steel pipe piles supporting Wharf No. 8 had extensive rust blisters over at least 75 percent of their surface area and a zone of severe corrosion approximately 6 to 7 feet below the water line. A second detailed underwater inspection of Wharf No. 8 was conducted, and the results corroborated those of the initial inspection. After a thorough review of the diver's report of the condition of the piles, several schemes were developed to repair the piles. This paper discusses the schemes that were developed and the repair procedures chosen.
