Abstract:

A systematic approach and recommendations are presented for design engineers use in planning and building safe docks and marinas, and in reducing the expense of damages which ice causes. The recommendations are based on more than ten years of research efforts including laboratory and field experiments, field observations, published information, and synthesis of actual design experiences in several hundred U. S. and Canadian Great Lakes harbors. The paper presents criteria for designs of piles, piers, and docks subject to ice; estimates of horizontal and vertical ice forces and soil resistances; recommended types of constructions, materials, and facility layouts to mitigate ice problems; and methods of ice control and suppression.
