Abstract:

This paper discusses the practical application of mechanistic pavement design principles for a proposed 8. 1 ha break bulk cargo storage yard that is part of the Port of Portland's rehabilitation program for Terminal 2. The preliminary design of the pavement section for the yard area was accomplished utilizing layered elastic theory coupled with determination of the subgrade and stabilized subgrade material properties by repeated load triaxial and diametral testing techniques. The preliminary pavement design analyzed alternative materials including asphaltic concrete, roller compacted concrete, and cement stabilization of dredge fill sand as a base/subbase material. The ELSYM5 elastic layer program was used to analyze the critical tensile strains and stresses within the pavement sections and to develop design alternates for each material. Selection of the recommended alternate was based on a detailed cost analysis.
