Dynamics of Fender and Rack Systems for Docking Ferries

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Dynamic Response of Structures

Abstract:

A dynamic analysis of a ferry fender and rack system is developed based on the conservation of energy principle and Newton's laws of motion. The dynamics of the interaction of the ferry, rubber bumpers, wales, and piles are developed. A rational analysis of such a problem must be based on a set of design criteria and assumptions which would include the maximum design velocity of the ferry at impact, depth of water at the ferry slip, general layout of the pile and rack system, depth and fixity of piles, properties of soil in which piles are embedded, etc.
