Abstract:

Three different total stress-paths were followed during shearing of the anisotropic consolidated (CAU) tests: compression, extension and a stress-path simulating an element under a plate load test at depth. All CAU tests show a marked non-linearity of the stress-strain curves at the strain levels relevant to the field conditions. Significant differences were found for the stress-strain characteristics obtained from the tests following different stress-paths. In a situation such as that for the London Clay it is shown that tests starting from isotropic state of stress will miss the important part of the stress-strain curve and underestimate the soil stiffness.
