Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Effectiveness of Highway Safety Improvements

Abstract:

Since the first roadways were built, highway designers have constantly been striving to ensure that motorists can travel to their destinations on safe highways. However, their efforts may not have always been readily apparent and their ideas not always adequately put into practice. During this evolution we have come a long way from simply providing for the transportation of goods and people. We should not be satisfied with existing efforts and, should continue to strive towards further enhancing highway safety. This paper will attempt to provide some insight into past and present roadside design principles and then outline some new concepts to be used in future roadside design.
