Abstract:

The objective is to provide a simple means of analytically combining a two-dimensional foundation with a beam-column structure so that the procedure can be used for preliminary design purposes. The paper describes the development of a method to produce an interface model which approximates the results obtained from a finite element solution. Attention is limited to structures such as slabs-on-grade or U-Frame base slabs for which a two-dimensional slice of the soil-structure system adequately represents the behavior for preliminary design. It is assumed that the dimensions of the structure allow a model composed of beam-column elements to represent this part of the system.
