Abstract:

Strain gages are the major source of data for the TLMRF (Transmission Line Mechanical Research Facility) research program. Measurement of member loads and bending moments in lattice towers and stress distributions in steel poles are the primary means of evaluating both analysis methods and failure criteria. Gaging procedures, instrumentation, hookup, checkout, calibration, and error analysis are described as applied at the TLMRF. Because of some unexpected results from the data, calibration and error analysis have become increasingly important to ensure credibility of the data.
