Specification Writing for Small Hydro-Generators

Abstract:

For small hydro projects, it is all too common for the spec writer to use a convenient off-shelf spec usually written for a much larger unit. Minor modifications (primarily ratings) are made and the spec is issued. Consequently the large functional/design requirements do not always fit the small unit and the resulting compromise tends to inflate the generator price without any increase in value of the unit. Experience has shown that in writing a specification for a small hydro project, a good practice is to approach it from the viewpoint of using motor type construction. For most small hydro projects, the generator size and rating is similar to motors in a utility power plant. The use of motor style construction for a generator can produce a quality product with long-term reliability and a shorter delivery cycle.
