Abstract: Principal characteristics and design features of such generators are discussed and options and preferences in their selection mentioned. Effects on inertia constant, efficiency, reactive power production, maintainability as well as different cooling systems are described. The general design of generators for Straflo turbines is explained using as an example the Weinzoedl project - the biggest double regulated Straflo units in the world. The generator bore diameter and inertia constant are compared to those of a conventional bulb generator and special design features are described. Gear-driven generators for open pit and S-turbine installations have to withstand high runaway speeds - up to 300%. For such applications, particularly suitable is a generator design with a cylindrical laminated rotor with the field winding placed in slots, especially since it permits complete vacuum pressure impregnation.
