Abstract:

This paper describes a case where the organizational approach to microcomputer control was taken and contrasts the results with optimal individual systems within the group. In this context, the activities needed to support the effective utilization of microcomputers for technical tasks by the divisions of a state department of transportation are assessed. Microcomputer needs are identified from responses to a survey of transportation professionals in state and local agencies in Virginia. Organizational elements and policies that inhibited the effective use of microcomputers were found.
