Abstract:

This presentation pertains to Seismic Design-Qualification for those portions of structures, systems, or components in a Nuclear Plant whose continued function is not required but whose failure could reduce the functioning of any plant safety feature to an unacceptable safety level or result in incapacitating injury to occupants of the control room. Such items may be viewed as Seismic Class (Category) II items in Seismic Category I structures. Essentially, these are non-safety related items in a safety related envelope. These have been categorized as Seismic Category II/I items. The program described herein is based on the philosophy that Seismic Qualification is an integrated process, in which the regulatory requirements are interpreted, adequacy of design is assured, system interaction is taken into account, and finally the installation acceptance is verified. The final acceptance documentation for each Seismic II/I installation is contained in a one page 'Documented Visual Inspection Checklist' which is treated as a Quality Record.
