Abstract:

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has recently instituted a program to inspect all of its buildings structures to insure structural integrity and public safety and to provide an early warning of required maintenance. This inspection program, reasons for its implementation, and costs of the program are discussed. Also discussed are the inspection of hidden structural elements, problems of asbestos insulation, and research needs related to building condition assessment.
