Abstract:

Pile-supported, light duty structures are especially vulnerable to the uplifting forces. To evaluate the parameters that control the magnitude of the uplifting force a laboratory model study was conducted in a refrigerated test basin. The study modeled both an isolated pile and pile groups, where the interaction between piles reduces the individual pile loading. The experiment was supervised by a real-time, interactive measurement and control program operating on a Hewlett-Packard 9845B desktop computer. Through use of interrupts, the program monitored tests used to measure the engineering properties of the ice. Measured data were stored on floppy discs for a more complete analysis at a later date.
