Abstract:

It has been customary to introduce the velocity distribution factors alpha and beta into the energy and momentum equations so as to avoid the integration associated with variations in velocity over a control surface. However, there is a constraint which applies to the direction of the velocity and the direction of the area of the control surface if alpha is to exist and have meaning. More rigid constraints pertain to the existence of beta. Under special flow conditions, alpha and beta have values other than those usually anticipated.
