Abstract:

The paper presents comparisons of model and prototype measurements as a means for evaluating the ability of a physical model to reproduce a geometrically complex prototype thermal intake and discharge. In addition, it investigates the sensitivity of a hydrothermal model to variations in independent variables, particularly densimetric Froude number and Reynolds number. The analyses are based on studies of the skimmer wall cooling water intake for the Prairie Island Nuclear Power Generating Plant at the St. Anthony Falls Hydraulic Laboratory. A three-dimensional undistorted thermal-hydraulic model built and operated to densimetric Froude number similarity was employed to investigate a method for improving the temperature distribution in the intake canal.
