Abstract:

This manual is directed at the engineering manager who is responsible for planning and executing engineering projects which require the assistance of specialists in engineering surveying. The manual emphasizes the planning, execution, and control of engineering surveying work rather than the details of the techniques involved. There are three essential divisions in the manual. The first part deals with topics requiring attention in the proper direction of most engineering surveys, including project planning; coordinate systems and computer applications; survey error analysis and adjustment; surveying instruments; survey specifications; and safety. The second part deals with engineering surveys for specific types of projects, such as roads and streets; high speed surface transportation facilities; airports; tunnels; dams, levees, and channel rectifictions; high-rise structures; and cross-country utility lines. The third part covers special types of engineering surveys or with special problems relating to engineering surveying, such as hydrographic surveys, mining survey, optical tooling, structural and terrain movements, environmental and resource surveys, and extraterrestrial surveying and mapping.
