Abstract:

Rational management of Caribbean coastal areas is hindered by the poor state of knowledge of coastal ecosystems and by shortage of manpower with expertise in coastal management. To address this problem, the University of the West Indies has established a Caribbean Coastal Management Study. The project study and training site is a 25 km long piece of coastline west of Kingston, chosen as representative of natural and stressed coastal environments in the region. The study site, the development scheme for the area, the field methodology and findings, and the training strategies are described and discussed.
