Abstract:

An oil spill risk assessment study should show the estimated relationship between the magnitude of an adverse environmental impact and the probability of equaling or exceeding that impact. For any project being studied, any unacceptably large impact must have an acceptably low probability of occurrence. Unless these probabilities are correctly estimated, no truly informed decision can be made as to the acceptability of a proposed project. An example study is used to point out the types of pitfalls and errors one should try to avoid.
