Abstract:

An investigation was performed to evaluate the solubility and sorption of aromatic solutes onto soil from an aqueous phase containing polar solvent. This work relates to the evaluation of certain phenomena associated with groundwater contamination problems. The work addresses the situation for which the release of a hydrophobic organic contaminant as a result of spill or accidental discharge may be accompanied also by the release of water-soluble organic solvents. The investigation examined the effects of polar solvent in water on the solubility of relatively hydrophobic solutes, and the effect of polar solvent-water mixtures on sorption of organic solutes onto soil. The results are interpreted by means of chemical thermodynamic models to predict solubility in water/solvent systems, and by semi-empirical models to correlate reduction in sorption characteristics with increase in solubility.
