Abstract:

The design of sludge treatment facilities for the 10 mgd Ithaca, New York, wastewater treatment plant incorporates both proven technology in the form of gravity thickening and anaerobic digestion and state-of-the-art concepts in waste fuel utilization and heat recovery. Digester gas produced during anaerobic digestion is used as fuel for two gas engines which drive electric generators. Heat recovery makes the system approximately 80 percent efficient. By utilizing digester gas in this fashion, the digester gas utilization system and most of the sludge treatment facilities have qualified for additional funding under the Innovative/Alternative Technology Program.
