Nitrate Analysis Utilizing Groundwater Modeling

Abstract:

Groundwater is the sole source of potable water for the Town of Barnstable, Massachusetts. It is, therefore, of paramount importance to maintain the overall quality within acceptable drinking water standards as determined by local, state and federal agencies. The unconsolidated aquifer which underlies Barnstable is susceptible to contamination from a variety of man-induced and natural sources, one of which is the gradual accumulation of nitrates. Although many sources of nitrates exist, the major source in the groundwater system underlying Barnstable appears to be generated from wastewater discharged to ground disposal systems at the Hyannis Water Pollution Control Facility and individual septic systems. As a result of these findings, the Town of Barnstable is developing land use instruments, including zoning bylaw modifications, as well as evaluating cost-effective solutions to effect higher levels of treatment at their municipal facility to provide the framework for maintaining the groundwater quality within the 5 mg/l planning goal.
