Abstract:

Given the complex, pervious nature of the foundation for Calamus Dam, every effort has been made to incorporate design features that will reduce and control the anticipated large volumes of underseepage and high exit gradients. An extensive instrumentation system has been included in the design in order to monitor the effects of this seepage and the performance of the dam. As the reservoir fills and begins to operate, it is believed that the instrumentation will provide valuable data to enable a better understanding of seepage behavior in this type of foundation, evidence of how well various design features function, and knowledge of how well design tools such as finite element seepage modeling can predict behavior.
