Abstract:

MILHY is an interactive, single event, lumped parameter model used to estimate streamflows and water surface profiles. The model was designed for use on basins less than approximately 5000 sq miles in area. It can handle single channel or branching channel systems. The unit hydrograph is defined by a two parameter gamma distribution up to the inflection point on the recession limb. Two exponential decay functions are used to define the remainder of the unit hydrograph. Water surface profiles are computed using a normal depth approximation for normal and supercritical flow or, for subcritical flow, the standard step method. A model application is demonstrated on the 670 sq mile Cowhouse Creek basin at Fort Hood, Texas.
